Which expedition cruise company do you work for?

I work for Maple Leaf Adventures, a pioneer in small-ship expedition cruising along the breath-taking coast of British Columbia and Alaska.

What do you think sets your company apart from other expedition cruise operators?

Maple Leaf Adventures has been a leader in ecotourism since its founding in 1987. We offer intimate, small-group expeditions, giving guests access to remote, pristine wilderness that large cruise ships simply cannot reach. Our deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, conservation, and cultural collaboration makes us unique.

We have actively supported environmental conservation efforts since the 1980s and were among the first to work closely with Indigenous communities, exploring their lands with respect and permission. Our guides are experts in marine biology, conservation, and history, offering immersive learning experiences beyond sightseeing.

Additionally, our Marine Debrief Initiative, launched during the pandemic, continues to provide valuable ecological insights. At Maple Leaf Adventures, every trip is about more than just travel—it’s about education, transformation, and connection to the wild.

Do you have a favorite destination that you always recommend to first-time expedition cruisers?

The BC coast is incredibly diverse, so it’s hard to pick just one, but for first-time cruisers, I highly recommend a spring expedition to Desolation Sound. This trip begins in Campbell River, where guests board the vessel and embark on an unforgettable adventure.

Spring is a perfect time to visit—wildflowers bloom, bears awaken from hibernation, and migratory birds return. The calm waters and dramatic fjords create an ideal environment for kayaking, hiking, and experiencing wildlife in its natural setting.

For those looking for a longer, more immersive experience, the Great Bear Rainforest offers stunning landscapes and unforgettable wildlife encounters, including grizzly bears and whales. If Indigenous culture is a priority, Haida Gwaii is a must-visit for its rich history and deep spiritual significance.

If you could design your dream expedition cruise itinerary, what would it include?

My dream itinerary would blend the best of Vancouver Island, Desolation Sound, and the Great Bear Rainforest, creating an epic journey filled with nature, culture, and marine life.

• Start in Victoria, exploring the Gulf Islands National Park.

• Head north to Campbell River, a gateway to orca encounters and stunning fjords.

• Cruise through Desolation Sound, where calm waters and towering peaks create a breath-taking backdrop.

• Stop in Port McNeill, an access point to wildlife-rich areas.

• Visit Bella Bella, home to the Heiltsuk Nation and some of BC’s most pristine coastal landscapes.

• End in the Great Bear Rainforest, where you’ll witness grizzly bears, ancient forests, and powerful waterfalls.

This itinerary captures the soul of BC’s coast, offering guests an experience of pristine wilderness, rich Indigenous culture, and life-changing wildlife encounters.

What are your top three travel hacks for making the most of an expedition cruise?

1. Embrace adventure with curiosity – Expedition cruising isn’t just about destinations; it’s about immersion. Nature dictates the journey, so be open to surprises like an unexpected whale breach or a last-minute shoreline landing.

2. Disconnect from technology – Let go of constant connectivity and fully experience the raw beauty of nature. Listen to Indigenous stories, engage with local conservation projects, and absorb the wisdom of our expert guides.

3. Pack smart and light – The essentials? Waterproof layers, warm clothing, and sturdy footwear. Expedition cruising is about function over fashion, and a well-packed bag can make all the difference!

Which lesser-known destination do you think deserves more attention from travellers?

Rather than a specific destination, I’d highlight a season—spring on the BC coast. Many travelers assume summer is the best time to visit, but April and May offer an entirely different experience.

During spring, wildflowers bloom, migratory birds return, and bears emerge from hibernation. There are also fewer tourists, meaning guests can experience nature in its purest form. Whether exploring Desolation Sound, the Gulf Islands, or the Great Bear Rainforest, spring is a magical time of renewal and rebirth.

The one thing you take with you wherever you travel?

A thoughtfully chosen book. For me, reading isn’t just a pastime—it’s a way to deepen my connection to a place. Before every journey, I select a book that aligns with the region’s history, culture, or spirit, making the experience even more immersive.
